RICHMOND, Va. – Versatility is something that is truly rare in collegiate track & field.

For the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s track & field team, it is clear that senior Verniece Johnson (Mineral, Va.) possesses that rare ability to perform at a high level and it was on display this past weekend at the Fred Hardy Invitational, hosted by the University of Richmond at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium.

Johnson started her weekend by clinching a victory in the long jump with a leap of 18’ 10”. She continued her excellence by anchoring both the 4x100 meter relay and the 4x400 meter relay to second-place showings with times of 47.86 and 3:53.57, respectively.

She wasn’t done as she picked up her fourth top-five finish of the meet in the triple jump with a mark of 36’ 8 ½”.

Sophomore Quina Fortune (New Orleans, La.) (left) was the other Ram to pick up a victory at the meet as she stopped the clock in 25.10 to capture the victory in the 200-meter dash. Fortune also ran on both relay squads along with Johnson.

The freshmen duo Rachel Montague (Marlton, N.J.) and Jazlynn Finney (Leesburg, Va.) each posted second-place showings in the triple jump and 200-meter dash, respectively.

Junior Sernarra Archie (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and sophomore Stephanie Newing (Virginia Beach, Va.) rounded out the top-five finishes with fourth-place showings in the 100-meter hurdles and pole vault, respectively.

While half of the Rams roster was participating at the Fred Hardy Invitational, the other half headed north to compete at the Towson Invitational.

Freshman Nicole Walters (Orange, Va.) led that pack with a time of 2:17.82 in the 800-meter, good for second at the meet.

Classmate Samantha Mosley (Farmville, Va.) joined Walters with a second-place finish of her own, this time in the shot put with a toss of 41' 5". Senior Natalie Duncan (Alexandria, Va.) placed right behind Mosley in third with a toss of 39’ 8 ½”.

Another freshman duo of Julia Anyaugo (Washington, D.C.) and Brandy Preston (Rocky Mount, Va.) rounded out the top five finishes at Towson taking third and fourth place in the discus throw with heaves of 121’ 3” and 117’ 8”.

The Black & Gold will take the week to hit the track hard after a busy weekend to prepare for the Colonial Relays next weekend in Williamsburg, Va.
