Uvarova Prevails Against Borisova (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

RICHMOND, Va. – Tatsiana Uvarova and Olga Borisova have probably played each other hundreds of times, but never quite like this.

Uvarova, an All-American for VCU in 2006, outlasted former-teammate and friend Borisova, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1) Tuesday in the singles final of the SMARTBOX State Indoor Tennis Championships, held at the Country Club of Virginia.

Despite an injured shoulder which hasn’t allowed her to practice in four months, the top-seeded Uvarova was able to shake off the rust and capture the crown and $1,000 first prize. The 23-year-old native of Minsk, Belarus completed her athletic eligibility at VCU in 2008. She will graduate with her degree in international studies next week.

Borisova didn’t come away empty-handed, however. Instead, the 25-year-old Borisova, who served as an assistant coach for the VCU women’s team last season, teamed with Viktoria Konstantinova to win the doubles crown, 6-0, 6-0 over Kirsten Elim and Julie Ogborne.

In men’s action, VCU Assistant Coach Romain Ambert and partner Carl Clark topped Scott Steinhour and Anthony Krawietz for the doubles title.

Ambert will attempt to capture his third straight singles championship Wednesday.
