DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia Commonwealth University Women’s Tennis team will look to upset in-state rival Virginia in an NCAA First Round match-up Friday, May 8 at Duke University’s Ambler Tennis Stadium at 11 a.m.

The Rams (18-9) will be making their fourth consecutive appearance in tennis’ version of “The Big Dance.” VCU, ranked 45th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) will be looking to advance to the second round for the first time since 2006, when it reached the Sweet 16.

Virginia (13-9), ranked 27th, is led by freshman Emily Fraser, an ACC All-Conference selection who is 26-12 in singles play this season. Fraser is 81st in the ITA singles rankings.

The Black and Gold have been paced by sophomore Kateryna Yergina, who is 16-9 in singles play, including 11-6 on the No. 2 court. Sophomore Laura Burns (23-5) and junior Olena Leonchuk (22-3) have also enjoyed standout campaigns. 

The winner of Friday’s match will take on either No. 3 Duke or Richmond on Saturday, May 9 at 12 p.m. at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
