Release: 05/09/2008

ATHENS, Ga. – South Carolina rallied from a 3-0 deficit to hand Virginia Commonwealth University a 4-3 defeat in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

After taking the doubles point, VCU charged to a 3-0 lead after a 6-1, 6-0 victory by Olena Leonchuk at No. 4, followed by a 6-2, 6-1 blitz by Laura Burns on the No. 5 court over Megan McGavock.

However, the 33rd-ranked Rams were not able to maintain momentum as the Gamecocks worked furiously to come from behind for the win.

VCU’s season is complete at 18-6. Thirty-second ranked South Carolina improves to 13-9 and moves on to meet Georgia in the second round on Saturday.
