RAMS SCORE EARLY AND LATE IN 2-0 WIN OVER GEORGE MASON
VCU remains unbeaten in its last six matches
FAIRFAX, Va.—A strong start and a dazzling finish extended the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s soccer team’s unbeaten streak to six on Sunday afternoon. The Rams (5-4-1, 1-0-1) produced a 2-0 win over George Mason (4-5-1, 1-1-0) to pick up their first win in conference play.
Senior Megan Flanagan (Franktown, Colo.) got the Rams going early, driving in a goal from 10 yards out after a pass from Stephanie Power (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) in the 21st minute. Flanagan is now tied with Power for the team-lead in goals with five. Power added to her team-leading assist total with her eighth of the season.
After the seniors combined for the game’s first goal, the teams remained scoreless until a pair of first-year Rams collaborated on an insurance goal in the 89th minute. Sophomore Sarah McAuly (Midlothian, Va.), a transfer from Jacksonville State, found freshman Azania (Taboao Da Serra, Brazil), who scored from five yards out on the left side for her first career goal.
Senior goalkeeper Kali Van Covern (Waynesboro, Va.) made four saves for her first career shutout. Since taking over the starting goalkeeper duties on September 19, Van Covern is 2-0-1.
The Rams out-shot the Patriots, 16-8. VCU held an 8-4 advantage in both halves. The Rams produced nine shots on goal, compared to six by the Patriots. Each team was whistled for one yellow card.
The Rams remain on the road in CAA play next weekend, traveling to Atlanta to take on Georgia State Friday at 4:00 p.m. before for heading to UNC Wilmington Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
