Assistant Coach

Tarrell Robinson recently completed his first season as an assistant coach under Beth Cunningham.  Robinson joined the Rams after spending the previous three seasons in his second stint at North Carolina A&T.  He served as associate head coach last year following three years as an assistant.

“I am very excited to be a part of the VCU women’s basketball program,” Robinson said.  “I was able to be hands on with recruiting and development of players at N.C. A&T, so I’m looking forward to adding that experience here and continuing to build on the success from the past few years.”

In 2008-09, Robinson helped guide N.C. A&T to a 26-6 record, a second-straight regular season MEAC championship, its first MEAC Tournament title since 1994, and the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, where the Aggies drew a 14-seed, the highest ever for a MEAC women’s team.

In his time with the Aggies, Robinson was instrumental in the program’s recruiting success.  He helped sign the most highly touted recruit in the program’s history in Jaleesa Sams, who was ranked as high as No. 31 nationally by Scouts.com, and secured Ta’Wuana Cook, who became the first N.C. A&T player to receive MEAC Rookie of the Year honors.

“We are really excited to have Tarrell join our VCU basketball family,” said Cunningham.  “I expect him to immediately be able to impact our basketball program.  He proved to be an outstanding recruiter during his time at North Carolina A&T and was vital in the success N.C. A&T had in winning back-to-back conference championships the last two years.”

Robinson began his coaching career during the 2001-02 season when he held the graduate assistant post for the N.C. A&T men’s basketball team.  There, he assisted with individual skill development, served as the film exchange coordinator and organized the summer basketball camp.  The following year, Robinson began his first stint with the Aggies’ women’s basketball program when he was named assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

The Fayetteville, N.C., native also has experience coaching in the high school ranks.  After his first season with the N.C. A&T women’s program, he served as an assistant boys’ basketball coach for two years at High Point (N.C.) Andrews High School, where he helped his squad to a 42-13 record and a pair of state tournament appearances.

Robinson has proven to be a teacher of the game with his participation as an instructor in camps for men’s basketball coaches Roy Williams of North Carolina, the late Skip Prosser of Wake Forest and former UNC Greensboro head coach Fran McCaffery.

In his four-year playing career at N.C. A&T, Robinson scored 934 points, hauled in over 700 rebounds and blocked 35 shots, while averaging 11.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game during his junior and senior seasons.
