DELAWARE STUNS VCU IN CAA SEMIFINAL, 3-1

BOSTON, Mass. – Behind a match-high 19 kills from Katie Dennehy, third-seeded Delaware stunned second-seeded Virginia Commonwealth University, 3-1 (15-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-16) Sunday in a Colonial Athletic Association semifinal at Solomon Court.
VCU, which swept a pair of regular season matches from the Blue Hens this season, was led by sophomore Ariel Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) (above), who booked nine kills and seven digs. Newman hit .450 and did not commit and error in 20 attempts.
The Rams charged out to a 1-0 lead in the match, hitting .306 in the opening set on the way to a 25-15 victory. Senior Elisa Kuehnel (Dresden, Germany) was the driving force for VCU in the opener, providing five kills and hit .556.
However, the Blue Hens took over from there. After hitting just .024 in the first set, Delaware registered a .356 mark the rest of the way.
After falling, 25-16 in the second set, VCU had an opportunity to regain the lead in the match. With the third set tied at 22-22, UD received back-to-back kills from Meghan Bonk and Kim Stewart to move ahead, 24-22. Dennehy finished the job for Delaware with one of her three service aces.
For the Rams, sophomore Jessica Ojukwu (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added 11 kills, while Kuehnel finished with 10 and 13 digs.
The Blue Hens advance to meet host and top seed Northeastern in the CAA Championship match on Monday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m.
VCU will conclude its season with a trip to the state of New Mexico over Thanksgiving weekend. The Rams meet New Mexico State on Thursday, Nov. 27 at 10 p.m. in Las Cruces, N.M. They will wrap up the season on Saturday, Nov. 29 with New Mexico at 10 p.m. in Albuquerque, N.M.
