TOWSON, Md. – Junior Ivana Rich (Cumberland, Va.) and sophomore Kelsie Clegg (Boise, Idaho) combined for 20 kills and 11 total blocks in Virginia Commonwealth University’s 3-1 (23-25, 25-9, 31-29, 25-17) win over Towson Friday.
VCU has won two straight matches to improve to 9-6 overall, as well as 1-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Rams also snapped Towson’s four-match winning streak. The Tigers are 13-5 this season and 2-1 in league play.
Rich, the CAA leader in blocks per game, hit .417, recorded 11 kills and added five blocks.
Clegg, recorded two of her nine kills and two of her game-high six blocks in the second set, when VCU hit .241 on the way to a 25-9 rout.
With the match tied 1-1, the Rams grabbed the upper hand when they outlasted Towson for a thrilling, 31-29, triumph in set three. Rich provided four kills and three blocks to spark the attack in the frame.
Senior Laryssa Goncalves (Curitiba, Brazil) produced 17 digs, while sophomore Lenka Melicharkova (Zlin, Czech Republic) handed out 26 assists and served up four aces.
Valerie Chromy hit .467 with eight digs to lead Towson.
