CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Juniors Lenka Melicharkova (Zlin, Czech Republic) and Mariel Frey (Lititz, Pa.) turned in career-best performances, but Virginia Commonwealth University surrendered an early lead to host-Virginia in a loss at the Jefferson Cup Friday at Memorial Gymnasium, 3-2.
The Rams slip to 5-1 with the loss, while the Cavaliers move to 3-2.
VCU was dominant early, hitting .348 on the way to a 2-0 match lead. However, the Rams wilted down the stretch, hitting .081 in the final three sets as Virginia rallied for the victory.
Frey led all players with a career-high 21 kills and added 16 digs for VCU. Melicharkova recorded 11 kills and did not log an error on the way to a .733 hitting percentage. Melicharkova added 41 assists, 14 digs and two blocks.
Simone Asque ripped 18 kills to spark Virginia, while Lauren Dickson added 17.
The Rams conclude Jefferson Cup play on Saturday, Sept. 5 when they face North Carolina Central at 1 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium. |
