VCU CLOSES JEFFERSON CUP PLAY WITH SWEEP OF NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Freshman Michala Kvapilova (Liberec, Czech Republic) fired nine kills and Virginia Commonwealth University served up 10 aces in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-20) rout of North Carolina Central Saturday at the Jefferson Cup at the University of Virginia.
The win caps a 2-1 weekend for the Rams and improves them to 6-1 this season. It’s the school’s best start under fifth-year Head Coach James Finley. North Carolina Central slips to 1-6 this year.
VCU controlled virtually every aspect of the match and out-hit the Eagles, .239 to .053.
Kvapilova hit .250 on the day and added 12 digs. Junior Mariel Frey (Lititz, Pa.) contributed six kills, eight digs and three aces to the Rams’ cause, while junior setter Lenka Melicharkova (Zlin, Czech Republic) continued to build on her outstanding start to the 2009 season with 27 assists, five kills and three aces.
Shantel Moore hammered nine kills and hit .318 to pace NCCU.
VCU will return to action Sept. 11-12 when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge. The Rams will play four matches over the weekend, including No. 7 Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 1:30 p.m.
