VCU THUMPS GEORGIA STATE, 3-0, NEARS CAA’S NO. 1 SEED

ATLANTA – Senior Ivana Rich (Cumberland, Va.) hit .471 with 10 kills and Virginia Commonwealth University neared the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title in a 3-0 victory over Georgia State Friday night.

The victory moved VCU (23-8, 11-3) within one win of its first regular season CAA title and the right to host the conference tournament. The Rams remain tied with Delaware for the league lead, but hold the tiebreaker with the Blue Hens. Delaware defeated Northeastern Friday night to keep pace. The Rams have won eight straight overall.

Georgia State falls to 16-13 on the year and 3-10 in CAA play.

In addition to Rich, VCU received six kills and six blocks from junior Kelsie Clegg (Boise, Idaho) and nine kills and eight digs apiece from junior Mariel Frey (Lititz, Pa.) and junior Michala Kvapilova (Liberec, Czech Republic).

The Rams were dominant across the board, hitting .301, compared to .192 for Georgia State. VCU out blocked the Panthers, 8-5, out dug Georgia State, 42-32 and registered seven aces.

Vineece Verdun led GSU with 11 kills and a .474 hitting percentage.

VCU looks to lock up the CAA’s top seed on Sunday, Nov. 15 when they travel to meet UNC Wilmington in Wilmington, N.C.
