NORFOLK, Va. – Toughness is one of the main traits that all college coaches look for in their student-athletes.

Senior Thibault Charron (Sens, France) showed his coaches and his Virginia Commonwealth University men’s tennis teammates a big time display of toughness at this past weekend’s Wilson/ITA Atlantic Regionals.

Charron, who suffered an ACL injury at the CAA Championships last April, posted three consecutive straight set victories to open the weekend and advance all the way to the quarterfinals of the 128-player tournament to take one of UVA’s top players Lee Singer. The fifth-seeded Singer was able to hold off Charron and advance into the semifinals.

“It was impressive to see Thibault come back in his first full tournament back from the injury and play the way he did,” Head Coach Paul Kostin said.

Freshman Krisztian Kroscko (Budapest, Hungary) and sophomore Filip Svensson (Angelholm, Sweden) also had strong weekends with both players advancing to the round of 32.

Kroscko received a bye in the first round and then dropped Arsenio Culver of Norfolk State to the tune of 6-0, 6-1 before falling to Milo Johnson of Virginia.

Svensson rolled past Dmitry Chekhlatyy of Morgan State (6-2, 6-2) and Nobu Tanaka of Longwood (6-0, 6-4) in straight sets, before falling to Corrado Degl’Incerti Tocci of Virginia Tech.

Freshman Camil Salomon (Limoges, France) notched a first round victory over Alfredo Rodriguez of Old Dominion, 6-3, 6-1, but fell in the second round to Maryland’s John Collins.

The Rams will take the winter and prepare to make their 17th NCAA Tournament appearance under Kostin. VCU will open its spring season in its annual 4x1 Tournament on January 22nd at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
