Assistant Coach
Marco Genee

Marco Genée, who is known for his ability to recruit in Europe, is in his first season with the Black & Gold. He will concentrate on recruiting and assist with on-field coaching.

Genée comes to VCU following two years with Triangle United Soccer Association in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He served as the director of coaching with the Triangle United Soccer Association. He also served as an assistant coach with UNC Pembroke, helping the Braves reach the NCAA Division II Final Four.

Genée has also worked as an assistant coach with Gardner-Webb and a volunteer assistant at the University of North Carolina.

“This is a great hire for VCU,” Head Coach Tim O’Sullivan said. “Marco is a soccer person. He’s passionate about soccer. That’s the first and foremost thing for VCU. He’s a very bright and very articulate guy who knows VCU. He has all of those qualities that are going to be outstanding for us.”

Genée holds a NSCAA Premier Coaching License and a DFB (German Soccer Federation) Coaching Diploma. He has spent several years coaching in the Olympic Development Program (ODP) and acted as a NCAA Site Representative during the NCAA National Tournament.

“He’s an international student, himself,” O’Sullivan said of Genée. “He has always helped us over the years find German players as one of our contacts in the past. Now he’ll do it on a regular basis for VCU. I couldn’t have found of a better candidate. He’s right spot on the money in terms of his passion. He’s spot on the money in the way that he looks at a game. Recruiting is big for us too and he has a background, not only as a youth coach in the country, but he’s an international student with international contacts. It’s the full package.”

As an active athlete, he was an apprentice-professional player for Werder Bremen in Germany from 1983-1989 and promoted 1990 with the VfB Oldenburg to the 2. Bundesliga.

In 2008, Genée earned his doctorate degree in educational leadership from Capella University and his master’s degree in physical education with a concentration in sports management from UNC Pembroke in 2004. As part of his Master’s thesis, he interned with his former club SV Werder Bremen.
