VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Sophomore standout Marle van Dessel (Oisterwijk, The Netherlands) was named All-Colonial Athletic Conference Second Team Friday at the annual league awards banquet on the eve of the CAA field hockey championship.
She finished the season with 12 goals, five assists, 59 shots and 29 points, leading her team in almost every offensive category. Her goal total is tied for the fifth most in school single season history. In addition, her 29 points rank sixth on VCU’s all-time list.
van Dessel was awarded Ram of the Week honors after providing two goals and two assists to lead the Black and Gold to a 5-2 victory over Radford. She supplied three game-winning goals for the Rams, including the only goal in a 1-0 defeat of Monmouth Aug. 31.
She recorded her first hat trick when VCU beat Penn 3-1 Sept. 14, becoming the first Ram to do so since Carlot Verloop in 2004.
van Dessel finished the season ranked fifth in the CAA in points, goals and game-winning goals. She also made the conference’s top-ten list in shots, shots-per game, points per game and goals per game.
