10-4-09
Box Score
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Hofstra’s Amy-Lee Levey scored 11 minutes into the first overtime period to turn away Virginia Commonwealth University Sunday at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.
The Rams slip to 6-4 overall and 1-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the loss. Hofstra is 6-6 and 2-2 in league action.
VCU erased an early 2-0 deficit with three unanswered goals from sophomore Hannah Lyerly (Williamsburg, Va.) and freshmen Kelsey Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.) and Melanie Marotta (Williamsburg, Va.), respectively, but the Rams couldn’t hold back the Pride’s lethal offensive attack.
Hofstra’s Genna Kova converted on a breakaway in the 59th minute to send the game into overtime. The Black and Gold was on the defensive most of the additional period. The Pride out-shot the Rams, 8-1, in OT.
Overtime has been a house of horrors for the Rams, who have lost six straight when the extra frame was needed. VCU Head Coach Kelly McQuade called Sunday’s loss “heartbreaking.”
The match featured plenty of offense, with VCU out-shooting Hofstra, 27-19. The Rams also owned a 7-5 edge in penalty corners.
Krizia Layne and Levey scored 10 minutes apart in the first period to stake Hofstra to a 2-0 lead.
Scherrer picked up a turnover in the penalty circle in the 27th minute and found Lyerly for the Rams’ first score of the day. Scherrer added the equalizer 30 seconds before halftime when she forced a turnover and beat Hofstra keeper Meredith Golden on a breakaway.
“Kelsey caused a spark for us today on the attack that we needed to get going,” McQuade said.
VCU looked poised to pick up the victory in the second half, when Marotta punched in her first collegiate goal in the 54th minute to give the Black and Gold a 3-2 lead.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 7, when they head to Longwood for a 6 p.m. non-conference tilt. |
