RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University field hockey was overtaken Friday night by Old Dominion, 3-0, at Cary Street Field.
The Monarchs (7-10, 3-3 CAA) scored back-to-back goals 25 seconds apart seven minutes into the match to build a 2-0 advantage. They never looked back on the way to their sixth straight win in the series.
“When we came out it seemed like we were afraid of them,” said Rams Head Coach Kelly McQuade. “That set us on our heels right from the start.”
Rachel Stream scored the Monarch’s first goal on a penalty corner at the 6:55 mark. Kathleen Shea added a goal in each half for ODU, which outshot the Rams, 14-9.
VCU keeper Megan Botteri (Mount Bethel, Pa.) played the entire 70 minutes of the match, racking up seven saves.
The Rams are now 8-8 this season, including 1-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
“We have to get it back in their heads that we have to be able to play and really come out hard Sunday.” McQuade said. “It’s going to be a good emotional game.”
The Rams will return to Cary Street Field on Sunday Oct. 25 on Senior Day, when they host to the Tribe of William and Mary at 1 p.m. The match will also serve as a part of “Play for a Cure”, an effort to raise money for cancer research. |
