Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore Marle van Dessel (Oisterwijk, The Netherlands) (pictured) led the Virginia Commonwealth University offense with two goals and four shots, but it wasn’t enough to seal victory in a 3-2 loss to the Drexel Sunday at Cary Street Field.

van Dessel scored her goals on consecutive penalty corners in the first half from senior Alaina Vernetti (Fredericksburg, Va. ) to give the Rams a 2-1 lead. van Dessel now has 10 goals and 25 points this season, the most of any VCU player since Carlot Verloop in 2004.

The Dragons’ Christina Mastropaolo answered the Rams’ attack with two goals of her own within ten minutes, at the 35:55 and 42:05 marks. VCU would not score again.

With the loss, the Rams extend their losing streak to six and fall to 4-8, 0-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Drexel improves to 9-3 and 3-1 in the conference.

VCU returns to action Saturday, Oct. 11 when it travels to Farmville, Va. to face Longwood University at 1 p.m.
