SCHERRER’S HEROICS YIELD SECOND ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONOR
9-14-09

RICHMOND, Va. – Freshman Kelsey Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.) (pictured, above) may be a newcomer to the college game, but she's playing like a veteran, and it’s getting noticed.

Scherrer won her second straight Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week award Monday, three days after lifting Virginia Commonwealth University to its biggest victory in six years, a 3-2 decision over 17th-ranked Iowa in Iowa City.

On Friday, Sept. 11, Scherrer shocked the Hawkeyes with back-to-back goals over a five-minute span to turn a 2-1 deficit in a 3-2 VCU victory. It was the Rams’ first win over a ranked team in six years, one that moved VCU to 4-0 for just the second time in school history.

In five games, Scherrer leads VCU with four goals and nine points.

Scherrer and the Rams return to the turf on Sunday, Sept. 20 when they host Monmouth at Cary Street Field at 1 p.m.
