9-6-09

Box Score

Philadelphia, Pa. –Junior Marle van Dessel (Oisterwijk, Netherlands) scored two goals and Virginia Commonwealth University improved to 3-0 for the first time in 20 years in a 4-1 victory over Penn Sunday at Franklin Field.

“I’m very proud of the girls, this was a mental test for them,” said Head Coach Kelly McQuade, “playing on a different surface than they’re used to, caused us to have to change our strategy.”

That change in strategy worked for the Rams, who outshot the Quakers 14-9 in the game.

Hannah Lyerly (Williamsburg, Va.) struck first for the Rams when she scored 4:48 into the contest off a pass from Rachel Krumm (Norfolk, Va.) from the top of the circle.

VCU added a goal from junior Marle van Dessel (Oisterwijk, Netherlands) 11 minutes later off a penalty corner to move ahead, 2-0.

Van Dessel kicked in her second goal of the day off a penalty stroke 31:15 into the contest, a score that gave the Rams a 3-1 advantage.

With the victory, VCU moved to 3-0 for the first time since opening 4-0 during the 1989 season.

The Rams return to action on Friday, Sept. 11, when they travel to the University of Iowa, for an 8 p.m. meeting with the Hawkeyes in Iowa City.
