Richmond, Va. – Junior Marle van Dessel (Oisterwijk, Netherlands) scored three second half goals, her second career hat trick, and Virginia Commonwealth University coasted to a 5-0 win Sunday at Cary Street Field.

Freshman Kelsey Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.) provided the Rams’ first two goals as VCU climbed to a 2-0 halftime margin. Scherrer and van Dessel are tied for the team lead with six goals this season.

“To have Marle score three goals and to have Kelsey score two goals is great, they have been producing a great amount of attack,” said Head Coach Kelly McQuade.

The Rams (5-1) also matched their victory total from a year ago with the win. Monmouth slipped to 3-5.

The attack started early at the 8:37 mark, when Scherrer found the back of the net after receiving a feed from Chelsea Hill (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the circle.

Scherrer struck again in the 29th minute, slipping a ball past Monmouth keeper Melissa Katz from six yards out, to send the Rams to a 2-0 lead at intermission.

The Rams were able to control the ball for most of the second half, outshooting the Hawks 7-2 in the half, and 17-6 during the game.

The second half was all about van Dessel, as the junior scored three goals over an 11 minute span, including two on nifty backhanded shots.

“It was good to see the higher scoring game, along with having our first shut out of the season,” said McQuade, “Now 5-1, we are sitting in a great place to start conference play next weekend.”

The Rams return to Cary Street Field next weekend when they meet the Blue Hens of Delaware on Friday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m.
