May 9, 2010 VCU SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST VIRGINIA STATE GAME 1: VCU 3, VIRGINIA STATE 1 Virginia Commonwealth University rallied to score three runs in the fifth inning and went on to defeat Virginia State University, 3-1, in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at The Diamond. Sophomore Taylor Perkins and freshman Nick Kime each went 1-for-2 and drove in a run, while senior Richard Gonzalez also collected a RBI. Freshman Blake Hauser, who saw his first action since April 2 after recovering from a shoulder injury, picked up his third win of the season after tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Meanwhile, senior Robbie Andrews recorded his eighth save. Virginia State’s Shannon Rush singled to lead off the third and later came home after Howard Spencer hit a ball up the middle and the Trojans took a one-run advantage. Sophomore Paul Nice started the VCU rally with a leadoff single to center in the fifth. Perkins then tripled down the right field line and knotted the score at 1-1. Kime followed with a double into the left field corner before Gonzalez put VCU on top 3-1 with a RBI groundout. VCU scored early and often in game two on its way to a 19-1 victory against Virginia State. The Rams, who plated runs in every inning but the sixth, improve to 27-20-1, while the Trojans slip to 25-24 on the season. Junior Joe Van Meter went 4-for-4 with eight RBI, including a pair of doubles, two homers and three runs scored in the nightcap. Gonzalez finished 3-for-3 with four runs and a RBI, while senior M.L. Morgan (right) went 3-for-5 and scored two runs. Freshman Ryan Farrar tossed four shutout innings with four strikeouts and collected his third win of the season for the Rams. Classmate Brennan Huelse and Van Meter each tossed a scoreless inning in relief. The Black & Gold plated three runs on just one hit and set the tone early in the bottom of the first. Senior Matt Leskiw and Van Meter walked, and Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Junior John Lenherr put the Rams on top with a RBI ground out before Gonzalez stole home and sophomore Brent Mikionis doubled off the left field wall to put VCU ahead, 3-0. The Rams sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four more runs in the second. Van Meter, who hit his sixth home run of the season, and Kime each drove in two runs apiece, while Leskiw and Gonzalez both collected a RBI. VCU added two more runs in the third and batted around for the second time in the fourth to go on top 16-0. Van Meter, whose eight RBI were one shy of tying the program’s single-game record, hit his second home run of the day in the fifth and extended VCU’s lead to 19-0 before former Ram Shawn McEnhimer’s RBI groundout in the sixth put Virginia State on the board. VCU will resume Colonial Athletic Association play with a three-game series at George Mason University beginning Friday, May 14 at 3 p.m. |
