RAMS SET TO OPEN 2009 SLATE AT UCF
Black & Gold take on Knights at 6:30 on Friday
2-20-09
ORLANDO, Fla. – This time of year baseball is synonymous with the state of Florida.
Most baseball fans are focused on the Sunshine State for Major League Baseball Spring Training.
Virginia Commonwealth University baseball fans will be focused on Florida this weekend as the Rams open up its 2009 slate with a four-game set against the Knights of UCF, beginning with a 6:30 p.m. tilt on Friday night.
Coming off a tough 2008 campaign, the Black & Gold will look to regain its Colonial Athletic Association championship form with six returning position players and three of its four starting pitchers.
Heading to the mound on Friday night will be senior Ian Thomas (Virginia Beach, Va.). Thomas boasted a 3-3 mark last season with a 4.45 ERA, while striking out 45 in 60.2 innings pitched.
Junior right-hander Phillip Deane (Richmond, Va.) will take the hill on Saturday afternoon as he looks to regain his form of 2007 and continue to shine the way he has in the preseason for the Black & Gold.
Offensively, the Rams will look for seniors Justin Wright (Yorktown, Va.) and R.J. Schenk (Yorktown, Va.) to lead a potent lineup that could score runs up and down the lineup.
UCF begins a new era under Head Coach Terry Rooney who comes to the Knights after a stellar assistant coach stint at national power LSU, where he helped the Tigers to a College World Series showing last year.
Game time on Friday night is set for 6:30 p.m., 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon and 1 p.m. contests on Sunday and Monday.
