VCU BLANKS RANDOLPH-MACON, 12-0

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University pounded out a season-high 18 hits for the second straight game and defeated local Division III foe Randolph-Macon, 12-0, Tuesday evening at The Diamond.
VCU, which has won four straight and six of its last seven games, improves to 8-3 on the season, while Randolph-Macon falls to 5-5.
Doug Otto and Joe Van Meter each had three hits, while John Lenherr contributed a pair of home runs for the Rams.
Lenherr put VCU on the board with a solo shot to right field to lead off the second inning and Otto gave the Rams a 2-0 lead with an RBI single in the third.
The VCU bats came alive in the sixth frame as the Black & Gold scored seven runs on eight hits. Lenherr got the team going again with an inside-the-park home run with one out, which was part of four straight hits for the Rams. A single by M.L. Morgan gave VCU a 6-0 lead before Gonzalez, Otto and Van Meter each drove in runs to give the Rams a 9-0 advantage.
Andrew Dimino came up with a pinch hit RBI single in the seventh and, in his first at bat of the evening, Michael Cheatham knocked in two runs in the eighth to give the Black & Gold a 12-0 lead.
VCU held Randolph-Macon to just four hits, two of which belonged to third baseman Greg Mitro, and Seth Greene picked up the win in his collegiate debut, allowing two hits in four innings of work.
The Rams return to The Diamond on Wednesday, March 10 for a 3 p.m. matchup against Quinnipiac.
